: : : : : I have a question regarding Ibuprofen for those who are taking the same medication. I asked my doctor the same question (left him a message) but he won't be back in the office until next week, and I am anxious about this.

: : : : : About 5 months ago, my doctor told me to take 600mg Ibuprofen 3 times a day. Has anybody here been taking similar dosage of Ibuprofen for a relatively long time? If so, how long? Also, have you been experiencing any side effects?

: : : : : I feel like my symptoms are improving so surgery is out of the question. I also don't feel any side effects from regularly taking Ibuprofen at this time. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

: : : : I was told that the max dose is 2400 mg per day, translating to 800 mg 3 times per day. It would be my opinion that you should be okay at the dose you're at, but check with the doc to be sure.

: : : Motrin (Ibuprofen)

: : : Generic name: Ibuprofen

: : :
: : : Motrin is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug available in both prescription and nonprescription forms. Prescription Motrin is used in adults for relief of the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, treatment of menstrual pain, and relief of mild to moderate pain. In children aged 6 months and older it can be given to reduce fever and relieve mild to moderate pain. It is also used to relieve the symptoms of juvenile arthritis.

: : : Motrin IB tablets, caplets and gelcaps; Children’s Motrin Suspension; and Advil tablets and caplets are available without a prescription. Check the packages for uses, dosage, and other information on these products.

: : : Side Effects
: : : as reported by "The PDR® Family Guide To Prescription Drugs®"

: : : More common side effects may include:
: : : Abdominal cramps or pain, abdominal discomfort, bloating and gas, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, fluid retention and swelling, headache, heartburn, indigestion, itching, loss of appetite, nausea, nervousness, rash, ringing in ears, stomach pain, vomiting

: : : Less common or rare side effects may include:
: : : Abdominal bleeding, anemia, black stool, blood in urine, blurred vision, changes in heatbeat, chills, confusion, congestive heart failure, eepression, dry eyes and mouth, emotional volatitity, fever, hair loss, hearing loss, hepatitis, high or low blood pressure, hives, inability to sleep, inflammation of nose, inflammation of the pancreas or stomach, kidney or liver failure, servere allergic reactions, shortness of breath, skin eruptions or peeling, sleepiness, stomach or upper intestinal ulcer, ulcer of gums, vision loss, vomiting blood, wheezing, yellow eyes and skin.

: : : Special warnings about this medication:
: : : Peptic ulcers and bleeding can occur without warning. Tell your doctor if you have bleeding or any other problems.

: : : This drug should be used with caution if you have kidney or liver disease, or are severely dehydrated; it can cause liver or kidney inflammation or other problems in some people.

: : : Do not take aspirin or any other anti-inflammatory medications while taking Motrin unless your doctor tells you to do so.

: : : If you have a severe allergic reaction, seek medical help immediately.

: : : Motrin may cause vision problems. If you experience any changes in your vision, inform your doctor.

: : : Mortin may prolong bleeding time. If you are taking blood-thinning medication, this drug should be taken with caution.

: : : This drug can cause water retention. It should be used with caution if you have high blood pressure or poor heart function.

: : : Avoid the use of alcohol while taking this medication.

: : : Motrin may mask the usual signs of infection or other diseases. Use with care in the presence of an existing infection.

: : : If you have diabetes, remember that the suspension contains 1.5 grams of sucrose and 8 calories per teaspoonful.

: : : Motrin chewable tablets contain phenylalanine. If you have a hereditary disease called phenylketonuria, you should be aware of this.

: :
: : Thank you for taking the time to point out all the side effects of ibuprofen. Wouldn't the same be true of any pain relief drug we may take for our pain though? Nothing is without side effects and every drug has a warning label on it.
: : I am lucky to not experience any side effects other than what I noted and since I do need pain relief, I will continue taking Ibuprofen. Each person differs in what their bodies can tolerate and each person needs to find the correct medication for their needs.

: As this is a CTS board I'm assuming you have been taking Ibuprofen in excess of 5 years for CTS? Is that correct? I would agree that taking any kind of analgesia for this amount of time would induce some form of side-effects.

: I can't imagine taking analgesics for such a length of time for something like CTS which is so easily relieved by a very minor surgical procedure which takes about 45 minutes to perform & means never taking pain meds again?

: Why have you been taking Ibuprofen for all that time?

Arthritis in my back. I have a choice between asprin and ibuprophen with fewer side effects than celebrex, etc. I do not choose to have ct surgery due to other physical problems.
Thank you for your concern.
