What about having a press like device that has a blade that sits about the thickness of the plate above a platform, and the platform would pass the plate under the blade, breaking off the material that's being scraped off? A device could be developed using a retaining frame for the plate, and a hydraulic powered steel blade that would do the scraping for you. It would cost the company some cash, but would be more labor efficient, and less wear and tear on the worker. Not to mention, you could clean more plates, making the boss happy. If I were you, if light duty is not possible, I'd figure on 12 weeks to recover, as you don't want to put that level of stress on wrists that have been operated on too soon.
